Life should be balanced in ALL aspects to be considered fulfilling!

It’s your fault if you’re not!

What exactly does it mean to you to “live a balanced life”? Do you even consider it to be important? And if you do, how would you even begin to know if you are or are not living this so-called balanced life?

A few questions that you may or may not have considered at some point in your life. I, for one, have.

It was my own fault!

Let me begin by eluding to the fact that for a large portion of my current existence, I was involved in a business that was not my passion. I landed up in this line of work by default, or if I am more brutally honest about it, through my own inability to make a decision!

Some background

Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by the influences of the business that my father started and I eventually joined the family enterprise because I didn’t have a clear passion to follow or a vision for my own independent future. Before realising it, two decades had passed. Although I was very good at what I did, I never felt any passion & happiness for the work and I only lived for the weekends! Every time I was able to take a short break in the form of a breakaway or vacation, the time to reflect on my life highlighted that I wasn’t satisfied with my lot in life. And it was all my own fault.

But I digress. The topic of this blog is balance in life and what that means to me. To me, this means that there should be proportional amounts of focus given to 4 key areas, namely, work, play, family and self (body & spirit).

In today’s fast-paced world, balance is becoming more & more important for health benefits, as the stresses associated with excessive focus on any one of these areas can have more than just psychological effects… and that is, physical effects too.

So what?

The benefits of creating & maintain balance in your life are plentiful. These include:

  • Stress reduction
  • Improved mental health
  • Improved physical health & longevity
  • Improved moods & energy levels
  • Improved overall happiness
We all strive for a better quality of life

How this is achieved and what it means for each of us differs, because everyone’s needs are unique. Some situations may be similar, but ultimately, nobody else wants exactly what I do and nor should they. We deserve our own Nirvana.

And now…?

I don’t have all the answers, as I too am searching for my feeling of fulfilment. However, I can recommend a few basic steps that may help you along the way.

Find ways to relieve stress

This might be through some sort of physical exercise, or even just some “down time”. Just change the pace and get out of the rut that is stressing you out. Most of the time, this would be work related, but it may also be caused by other factors, like relationships or economic factors. The key here is to take your mind off the problem, so that your subconscious has an opportunity to give you another perspective without overloading the system. Quite often, if you don’t think about it, a solution will present itself.

A healthy mind

With less stress comes a healthier mind, which in turn will give you more focus on important tasks that add value. Willpower & mental fortitude will also be improved, thus allowing you to push through when the going gets really tough.

Live long and prosper

Although I am not a “Trekkie” (fanatical follower of the Star Trek sagas), this greeting by Dr. Spock is a great mantra to live by.

Healthy body, healthy mind is another slogan which rings very true and has been used for as long as I can remember to remind people to follow a balanced lifestyle in order to live a longer & happier life.

It isn’t a necessity to live by the strictest of diets and workout regimes to ensure that you can be healthy and well, but rather adopting a good lifestyle. This generally means making the right choice over the easy one. As far as diet is concerned, you have the power to decide what you fuel your body with and you should also be aware of the consequences of not doing so. This doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy the sweeter things life has to offer, but you should think about what you consume the majority of the time.

Compare your body to your motor vehicle… would you put unleaded fuel into the tank of your diesel-powered engine, or visa-versa?

One choice affects another

Every choice you make, will take you along another path, different to the one you would be on having made an alternative one! “That is obvious”, you say? But have you ever really thought about it? My point is that any decision you make at any point in life, will ultimately bring you to your destination. So, you have the power over exactly where that will be!

It all boils down to the same thing…

Balance is a choice

All of the aforementioned benefits, as well as the would-be negative side, all comes down to one thing: Your choice! It is a cumulation of all the little things, rather than just the one big thing that will make you who you are and where you end up. This can be by chance or by design. Therefore, balance is a choice.

What does this all mean?

This blog evolved into something totally different to what I thought about when I started writing it. There were a few times that I thought about starting over and remain focused on the point that I began with. However, I decided to go with the flow and let it develop as it did which highlights the point that it ultimately made: choices madewill affect the outcome of everything!

Aiding Evolution

Just like this blog evolved, EVERYTHING around us evolves continuously. Change is the only constant in our universe! We need to adapt to change in order to survive and thrive. Make the choice to drive your own evolution and be the person you were meant to be.
